Honda 9.9 Kicker

Question / verification of Honda 9.9. Started perfect last May but never used it all summer. I know..... no need to state the obvious. Now, it will fire up for about 5 seconds and then dies, and I can't get it started unless it sits for awhile; then does the same thing. Dewinterized it in May thinking I would use it and never fired it up while out in the Sound.

Question: Should I take it to a service shop for a full carb cleaning ($220) or should I treat this as an Alaskan winter project with my 2 boys. Honda shop says easy to do and only takes about 2 hours.

What level of technical experience is required - is it fairly straight forward to simply purchase a Helm service manual and a carb kit and give it a shot. We're just now entering the first of six months of non-boating season - so I do have some garage time ahead.

There are some variations of Honda carburetors-----------------------------They all have small holes in the jets.--------------------No need to pay that kind of money to have it done.-------------------Take the time , after you are done you will say ------------" that was easy "

You might try spraying carb cleaner through the fuel line and ventura and let it soak, you might get lucky. Add a very strong dose of SeaFoam to the gas and try to start it that way.

The shelves are full of " mechanic in a can " ------------Because people buy the stuff.------------It rarely works to clean plugged jets properly on an outboard.

You can buy a whole new carburator for about $150. Just need to order it by the serial number to get the right one for your engine.

Many thanks for all the advice. I think I'll try the do-it-yourself approach and, if all else fails and I end up breaking it, then I'll just go the American way and buy another carb - still cheaper than having the local Honda dealer clean it.
