Honda 5Hp vs Yamaha

Hi everyone I plan on purchasing a new 4 stroke outboard for the first time. I have an old 60's Sea Horse that has seen better days. I was thinking of either the Yamaha 6hp or a Honda 5hp. I am looking for quality, reliability and a motor that is easy to work on and has available parts. I just wanted to get some advise from some guys that have experience with these motors. I hope no one minds if this is a kind of like a double post but I want to hear what the Honda guys think and what the Yamaha guys think. Thanks everyone

How many horse was the old sea horse? These new 4 strokes have less torque and power than the same hp old 2 strokes, to me the Honda and Yamaha are very comparable. I’d buy the one that weighs less and or costs less.

They both are very sensitive to bad fuel, you can’t beat them around like you could the old 2 strokes, you can’t let them sit around with fuel in them for 6 months. I have a 2017 Yamaha 2.5hp, it probably has 20-30 hours on it but was left sitting with fuel in it by the prior owner. Needs a carb cleaning or kit, only runs with choke.

I just finished rebuilding a 1962 and a 1964 Johnson 5.5 HP.-----Far better ( cheaper to own ) motors than a single cylinder 4 stroke in my opinion.----But if you can not turn a wrench , then
new is best for you !

I couldn't agree more, those old OMC's are some of the best engines ever produced. Far more reliable, cheap to fix, plenty of parts available. What's wrong with "60's Seahorse", thats seen better days? What horsepower is it?

If you have a good Honda dealer and no Yamaha shop in your area , then the choice would be obvious.-----And if 2 strokes are banned in your area then a new motor is best option.

Yes its a good little motor its a 66 5hp LD-11C, I never had to much trouble with it. I had it apart last year and it only needed an impeller I was thinking of selling her but maybe I'll hold on to it. The main reason I want a new motor is because I need a motor with a neutral and reverse, its hard to back troll and control the boat drift while Walleye fishing with a direct drive motor. I was just hoping to hear why one might be better then another. I'm familiar using a Yamaha 6hp as I've used them at a fishing lodge I visit every year but always thought the Honda would be another to consider.

I would look for a donor ( damaged powerhead ) 6 HP 1966 to 1979.------Put the 5 HP powerhead on there.-----The 5 HP has a smaller bore carburetor.-----So install the 6 hp carburetor on the 5 HP.

Great idea Racerone I did read somewhere these motors were detuned 6hp.

Powerhead is the same as a 6 HP.-----Carburetor body is of a 3 / 4 HP.---Throttle linkages are a bit different.-----5 HP did not come with a thermostat either.----In my opinion it is easy to adapt the 5 hp to get a 6 HP motor with shifting feature.
