Honda 225 Four Stroke compression test

Hi Gang,
I frequently contribute and receive info from the Volvo and Crusader sections of this forum. I was asked by a customer to perform a compression test on a Honda 225hp four stroke outboard motor.I am hoping that someone could guide me thru the procedure. I have performed many, many compression tests on inboard motors. I curious as to whether the lanyard safety tether also disables the starter motor as well as the ignition? If not what is the best way to disable the ignition, can I also disable the fuel? What is considered a good compression figure for this motor? Are the coils direct on the plugs or do they use a plug wire?

Thank you in advance,
Jon Allen

Removing the safety landyard will kill the spark only.

To cut off the fuel, you have to disconnect the high pressure fuel pump. The connector is located on the starboard rear lower side of the engine just under the cowling. It is between the injectors and the spark plugs.

The compression should be between 199 - 228 psi. Compression should be taken with motor at full throttle. Put the shifter in throttle only and move it full throttle.

The coils connect directly to the plugs. That is what you have to unscrew to get the plugs out.

Hope that helps.

If you have to get into anything serious with this engine, most on the forum will recommend the Honda Repair Manual through Helminc. You choose it by engine serial number. It is somewhat expensive, but so much better than the Clymers or the Selocs (which sometimes give incorrect info)

Thanks Honda Dude,

One more question if I may. Does the lower engine cover have to be removed to gain access to the bottom spark plugs? If so,how is it removed?

Thanks Again,

You have to get the port side almost off. I think you can get to the plugs on the starboard side without cover removal (I can not remember for sure). You have to remove #23 cap...http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2005/BF225A5 XA /EXTENSION CASE/parts.html there are some screws under that. And several #31 screws all around the cover. The top edge of the cover is also retained by a couple of pins. So once the screws are removed, you have to lift the cover off of the pins.

Hondadude is correct. Word of warning, You cannot remove some of the bolts and try to flex the cover to get the coil out, you will crack the cover. So take your time and loosen all the bolts.
