Honda 20HP 2003 Issue

Need assistance on identifying the problem with my engine Model #BF20D3 SHA

Mainly when warmed up it will run great then only idle, as soon as I increase the fuel it will die. Sometimes it will do this when it is cold but usually only after running for 20 mins or so. I will idle down some to stop, leave engine running then go to take off again and it will only idle, as soon as I give it fuel it will die.

I have purchased the carburetor kit and had this changed, I have put new plugs in, I have changed the fuel line and filter thinking this was the issue.

I live in Guam so no good/certified mechanics around anyone have advice on what to try next?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

You have to be sure that all the passages are clean in your carburetor. Just putting new parts in it, may not fix it.

Is your accelerator pump stuck? It is the little plunger on the side of your carburetor that moves down when you increase the throttle.

The actual plunger is inside the carb bowl. There are many passages through the bowl that feed fuel to different parts of the carburetor. They all have have to be clear too.

I would recommend the purchase of the Honda Marine Carburetor manual. It takes you step by step through a carb cleaning. Ebay http://stores.ebay.com/Honda-Power-....html?_nkw=carb&submit=Search&_sid=1027410698

or Amazon https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=me=A14VJQOXKKYWSY&field-keywords=carb

Some folks just purchase a new carburetor, when they do not have the patience or knowledge to go through it. The are not that expensive. It does take some time to be sure that all passages are clean.

Thanks Mike, so you think the Carburetor for sure, I just had a guy replace the rubber seal on the plunger and put on the new carburetor kit you discuss above, I guess he messed something up and didn't get it clean enough. with the level of knowledge here on Guam maybe I'm better off getting a new/back up carburetor. is there anywhere I can mail my old one to so it can be rebuilt correctly and shipped back to me?
Thanks again for the assistance!

I don't know of anyone who does mail order carb work.

The cost of shipping and parts and labor may be as much as a new carburetor.

The downside to cleaning a carb by itself.....even though all the passages, etc are clean, you still are not sure all is good until you put it on the motor and make adjustments. I do not do it, if someone brings just a carb in. Even if you clean the carb perfectly, who knows if the customer puts the carb on correctly or even if the motor has other issues (compression issues, etc). Then...guess who gets blamed for "not cleaning the carb correctly"..

I tried a quick google search and I did not immediately see anyone who does it...I could be using the wrong search words.

Mike

Also....am I sure it is a carb issue? No. It has all the classic symptoms of a dirty carb. Should always check compression, spark and timing before jumping to the carburetor. Just like the doctor checks your blood pressure, temperure, weight, etc before he does surgery.
