Honda 15 hp problem at low speed

I have a 2001 15 hp 4 stroke honda outboard its new to me...took it out for the first time today runs great at any speed except when throttled all the way back, it will kinda chug along and i can tell its almost ready to stall so i will have to gas it. For the most part this will always happen but sometimes it will run good at the low speed for 10 min or so then it will start to have problems again. Any ideas on what it could be runs great other then at the low speed which i would like to have for fishing.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

One of the things these 15 hondas are good at is going slowly for long periods with no issues fouling plugs. From your description I believe you have some contamination in your carb. Remove it and clean it well, and fit new fuel filter. If you notice much dirt please check the rest of your fuel system or you will do the job again.

Cheers
John

Ok thanks for the response ill try cleaning out the carb i thought that could be it. Also what is the slowest this motor should run at? I have it on a 16' deep v alum boat again the motor is new to me so im not sure if im asking it to go slower then its able to go. I just figured it should run when on the slowest speed unless the guy before me messed around with the carb adjustment.

Yes you need to clean your carb. I have a 10hp that I have done this to several times. If you don't run it dry when you are finished with it the gas that they make these days is so crappy when it evaporates it leaves a flaky residue in your float bowl that plugs the little orifices in your carb.

I had the same problem with my 15 hp motor. The motor would die after trolling about 15 to 30 minutes. Found out that it was the pilot hole that was plugged up. So no air was getting to the low idle jet.
