Honda 130hp Starter Issues

Hi folks,

My father has a 130 honda outboard which seems to having an issue with the starter getting hot after cruising around for a half hour or so. He replaced the starter, then the ignition switch and it still seems to be getting very hot to the touch. Seems a bit weird. Any thoughts?

The 130 has one small lead that runs from the starter solinoid to the starter. If you have a test light, see if you can safely connect one end of the test light to that lead and the other ends to a good engine ground.

The light should only come on during starting. If it stays on while the engine is running, then the starter is staying engaged.

Then move the light to the positive side of the lead that is feeding the solinoid. Run the engine again. If the light goes away after starting, the the solinoid is locking up on itself.
If the light stays on, then you probably have a blown diode inside the main relay.

The feed to the starter solinoid also goes to the main relay to keep the fuel pump running while starting. If the diode is shorted, it will backfeed and lock up the starter as long as the key switch is turned to on.

Great thanks Mike! I'm not sure of the exact year but it looks like for some years there was a service bulletin for that 130 engine and the main relay?
