I took my family out on the river and had no problems. After docking for lunch I started the engine with no problem but after pushing off of the dock and engaging the motor into forward nothing happened. OK the prop moved a little but more by current flow than power. We ended up going home in reverse. I loved how no one offered help but everyone felt it necessary to tell us that the boat was facing the wrong way. I suspect the problem is in the lower unit but I don't know how to dismantle it. Help me please.

"It's pretty simple. The first thing you will want to do is copy the figures written into the lower unit with magic marker. These are your shim codes for the lower.

But unless you have hit something really hard and broke something, I would look at the prop. These still had a shear pin, and would sometimes "run backward" after shearing the pin. So pull your prop and check that first.(pn-58131-881-000).

Next you might look under the carb for the cross pin and cotter that holds the shift rod on the shifter. If it's missing, it will shift into reverse, but not get pulled back into forward.

You may have to pull the lower to retrieve it if it made it down the hole. You have to un screw the connector as they won't fit down the hole. (Count the turns as it is the neutral adjustment,)

The shift in the lower is an almost duplicate of the early Scott-Atwater, where they had a ramp with notches to set the shift dimention.

So if that doesn't fix it get back to us."
