"Hello again. 1989 88spl. I replaced my old AMP guage with a volt guage, So I am new to these readings. Before I start the Evinrude I get 14 volts, at idle I get 15 volts. At full throttle the guage gets pegged at the top, over 17 volts. Is this normal, or is there something wrong?"

Readings all sound rather high

Readings all sound rather high. A fully charged battery that has stood and rested for say 12 hours should read 12.7 to 12.8 (maybe 12.9)
The 88 appears to have just a simple rectifier with no regulator so you would expect a reading of 13.something at idle then rising as the speed increases but 17 volts is excessive and if true will be overcharging the battery. I would cross check with a modestly decent multimeter and expect you to find that your new voltmeter is simply over reading.

What sort of charging current did you see on the old ammeter at full speed.

The old amp guage did not work

The old amp guage did not work at all. I will check with my multi meter. I had the battery on a charger right up until I left. 1/2 hour drive then into the water. Thanks.

i am running a 1994 88 and hav

i am running a 1994 88 and have the same problem if i use top of the line batteries...especially the sealed types..i am currently running deep cycle batteries for everything and all is ok....did you just replace the battery with a new one?turn your running lights on or plug in a cooler or something and see if that 17 volts drops off after its run a little while...Morten can explain the theory of why this happens better than i..the rectifier will fail if let run like this....Carl
