" My 1982 35 Johnson idles fine but when running it drops rpm, then speeds up and then drops again. All without moving the throttle. I have already replaced the plugs and no improvement. "

"Mike.... Slow surge=Fuel. Instant surge=Ignition.

If a slow surge, check for leaks between fuel pump and fuel supply as that would cause the pump to draw air. If no leaks, pump the fuel primer bulb when the problem takes place.... If the problem ceases, I'd suspect the fuel pump.

If a fast surge, that could be many things such as a plug wire shorting out, no continuity between the primary and secondary winding of the coil, dirty points, points set wrong, a worn wobbly armature plate etc.

" Thanks joe, It's probably more of a fast surge. I keep the boat in a boat house so it's not very convenient to work on. I'll replace the plug wires first -they are original as is the coil. Thanks again. --mike "
