Hi everyone. I have just got 13ft Avon dinghy with a 2005 Johnson 8hp. The motor was stored for many years before I bought it, it was my uncles. I built a little stand for it and got it in a barrel of water to start bit for first time.before it was stored the cylinders were filled and drained with 2 stroke oil to give them some protection etc and when pulling the cord slowly u feel good compression etc.. The motor started almost first time and idled well once I had set the idle speed adjuster correctly.... Then it died. I went to start it and it would catch and die.. I noticed when this happened the primer bulb (bulb, tank,lines all new) was pretty soft. Squeezed again and I could hear the carb filling. It got really hard to squeeze and then starts first pull, revs really nice, good response.. But then dies after 30 secs or so.. Again primer bulb was very soft.. Its like the pump isn't pulling fuel. So I primed the carb and removed the quick connect and started it. It died after about 10 secs, much quicker than previously which leads me to assume the carb holds 10 secs of fuel, and as it was running longer the pump is doing something.
I've read on here to check fuel lines for leaks (air ingress) which I will do tomorrow, but any other hints would be awesome. I'm no stranger to engines but they usually have wheels attached
