"I have a Mercury 95hp Thunderbolt. It is an in-line 6. My controler broke and I replaced it but when I went to attach my gear shift cable, the arm to attach it to won't come out of forward. like it's stuck and won't shift down to neutral. Any ideas? I realy would like to get back on the water and I'm not able to afford the high prices of a mechanic."

"Welcome to the forum,

Many potential reasons:

Could be case of poor maint and dried up lube,
Lower case gears seized, or
Some sort of fouling in the linkages.

Why did the original control unit break? You'd not want same to happen with new one due to cause of failure happening again...

From a chilly autumn-ridden Johannesburg,

Cheers!"

"Thanks Ben, I appreciate the post. When I got the motor it worked fine. Shifted well and the whole bit. The controler that I had before; when I took it off and looked inside it looked bad. Ignition wires were rusty and about to fall apart and alot of places were just wore down to the point were things that were supposed to catch weren't. You could barley feel when it went into neutral. The motor still shifted fine though. The remedies you listed are they ones that require profesional help, and will it cost me an arm and a leg?"
