I recently bought a boat with a 3.0 merc cruiser, took it out was running great until it started to sputter and died could no get it to restart even though it wanted to run as it would start briefly and die again so it has spark has fuel.what else should I look for.would it just pop over but not start if the alenator is bad??

Which 3.0 as in serial number or at least year?

You bought a boat and haven't done anything but put gas in and went boating, right?

would start briefly and die again so it has spark has fuel.
Need more testing. Most likely your loosing spark when key is released, but needs verifying

Measure the 12V at the coil with key ON motor OFF, then while cranking

It's an 87 3.0 146 or 142 hp wants to start but won't

Question 1.
Do you have any experience with point ignitions, starting systems, fuel systems?

It is NOT a 146 or 142 hp.....try again...maybe read the engine tag or flame arrestor cover?

1987 3.0 would be 140 hp.

There were two ignitions, points and "digital" Electronic.

I would suggest including every piece of info on your engine when you post a question. Size and year is only two of many possibilities of components.

It also allows for more precise answers/suggestions to/for troubleshooting.

If all the questions are to identify your set up it waists to many posts and any info will be staggered all over the place.
We are on post 8 and now just getting very important information.
