I am guilty of picking on carbs first. Why? Fuel is crap today. MN is ethanol state.....1 of 7 states that they cram it down our throats. At least 1/2 of all my repairs here are fuel related. This includes diesel fuel too. I can't run the garbage in my old equipment......gotta buy heating fuel and pour in additives.
Be sure to be careful when cleaning main jet. It will be open, but may have residue that will restrict its flow. Jets are carefully engineered to provide the exact amount of fuel needed for your motor....not considering higher altitudes, say above 3500 ft. Be sure not to change jet bore size, but instead use acetone, or throttle body cleaner and a welding tip cleaner. Why? Welding tip cleaners will not harm the material that the jets are made of, and alter the orifice size....(unless you go ham with it). Don't apply any pressure on float needle when adjusting the float to parallel to the carb float chamber mounting surface. When carbs are bolted back into position, make sure they are synchronized to all open exactly the same....why? Because if a piston is getting dragged up and down by the other operating cylinders and not getting fuel/oil mix.....it can cause permanent damage.
