To whom please note that this information is for a Mercurycruiser Alpha 1 engine 350 or 5.7 litter 4barrel Carburetor gas having trouble with my new cable I put on a new sea pump New gasket New shift cable renew side mount control shifter new cable from there now I only have L H Forward can't get into natural and can't get into R H Reverse Yet my dog fish shows little to the left not straight but close please help lower end before I put it together i trun the star shape gear trun the proppler to the left installed the lower unit went into like butter now I do All above it's a 1991 Mercurycruiser Alpha 1 350 My boat from then please help thank you
 
With the lower unit in a stand you turn the splined shaft(star shaft) fully clockwise whine turning the prop counterclockwise until locked. This is Fwd gear.
Lower the upper unit down making sure the brass shoe(shifter unit) is in a straight line and turn the inputshaft slightly to align the driveshaft to the upper gear.
 
Boat doc . You are saying on my 1991 Mercurycruiser Alpha I that I.have to lower the bottom unit.went I installed it back I-a- turn the small star clock wise--b- I turned the prop clock wise till it click-c-the brass dog fish is slightly to the left-d-laiding down looking up at the dog fish brass that slides into a square open stainless or silver part.-e-prop is still counter cw-f-the side mount shifter is RH forward-g- I can't pull LH natural and resever it's hard to pull back -H- I didn't start the motor because in RH forward I installed new cable from the shifter control side mount and disconnected the bracket that bolted onto the exhaust manifold were the meeting of the cable go. I'm looking forward to read more from you as quotes I do my own work but this year I went with new cable steering control unit New sea pump New gasket now I'm confused with it i guess I'm getting older and slipping away your opinion counts LOTS and i only us Mercurycruiser Alpha parts no after market material only Mercurycruiser thanks i will read your opinion as i except it because you know more than i do thanks help please
