i have a 1979 omc 800. i removed the lower unit and am trying to put it back but i cant get a reverse after it is installed. please help.
 
You had f - n - r before you took it off ?

Exactly how did you remove it ? You pulled the cable thru the transom.

Give us a little info.
 
we removed the prop, then removed the six bolts that hold the lower to the exhaust housing. the drive cable wouldnt release so we shifted from forward to reverse and the whole lower unit just fell off. all the gears and internals looked ok . we put it all back together and now no reverse. when we shift to reverso, it stays in neutral. but if i give the cable a little nudge from the engine compartment, it shifts into reverse.
 
can someone please help. i am trying to figure out why i dont have reverse after we put the entire lower end back together. a 1979 omc 800.

Yer not gonna get much help in the Mercruiser forum...
