Help with Shift Linkage disconnect 28 Johnson SPL, unkonwn model

I have a mid 80's, I presume, 28 HP Johnson SPL, the model and serial number are worn from the tag. Issue is trying to disconnect the linkage to remove the lower end to change impeller. There are 2 removable peices to the lower end, the lowest piece , which includes the prop, and a piece just above it that is about 8 inches long, it's almost like a spacer piece, which connect to the bottom of the exhaust housing. I can disconnect each of these parts, from each other, and the top one from the exhaust housing, but there's no linkage disconnect between them, and not much room to work either, maybe 3/4 inch. Is the disconnect for this engine in the motor housing, behind and below the carb? It seems like on this engine, the starter would have to be removed in order to remove the carb (what a pain). There's also only one water intake screen, and it's near the bottom of the lower end, so no linkage disconnect there either. Any help would be appreciated.

Without a model number, I have to assume the shift rod connector is where you unbolted the 5" extension housing from the exhaust housing, but you say not. You can get the most access by having the gearcase in forward gear, then move the shifter to reverse as you lower the gearcase. That is to say gearcase in forward and shifter lever in reverse. Am i making sense?

If it isn't there, then I don't know where it is.

I'll give that a try and submit some pictures as well. Is there any other way to find out the model number, aside from the tag on the mount bracket?

Half way down the exhaust housing you should find an oval cover held on with two screws.starboard side.remove cover.

Dang, there it is. Just went outside and checked and the oval cover is there. Would you happen to know the year or model based on that oval cover being in that location on this 28HP Johnson? How would I know which impeller to buy, or are they universal for the 28HP's?
