Help with rd-25d motor?

Hey guys I have just been given a 14 ft fibreglass boat with a rd-25d 1963 40hp engine(from what I believe!) it is currently not running.I see that it's a 2 stroke, will I need to run a mix of 25:1 or get away with a 50:1 mix? Also I am having trouble with spark . One cylinder had a strong spark but the lower is a bit weak. Here in New Zealand these parts are hard to come by. I'm willing to buy abroad but just need a few tips on what I could need. Also compression is even. Can anyone tell me what I would be expecting from a healthy motor?

any help would be amazing!!

cheers
Hayden

Thanks. Yeah have had a look things look to be in order. Can't remember psi reading but remember them being even. Il put tester back on. Thanks for the link. The fact that I have got spark would assume things are working but not to potential, but I have no doubt the spark on one cylinder would be blowen out before ignition. What test can I carry out on ignition parts?

thank you
hayden

Here is your motor's exploded parts diagrams:
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1963&hp=40&model=RD-25

You can use those part numbers to find any parts you may need. Would be a good idea to get an OMC service manual for your motor to.

What were the compression numbers?

I would pull the flywheel and inspect the magneto parts, i.e. coils, points, etc.

Cave man spark tester: Stick a #2 Phillips screwdriver (with a plastic handle) into the plug boot and hold it 1/4" away from a head bolt. Look for sparks when you crank it.

Seafoam? What is that mate?

Numbers are a bit low but they are even. Probably get better after running it for a while. It could be the guage also but you should get fire with good spark. Can you get seafoam there once you get it running give it a good decarb and see if the numbers improve.

Ok motor runs. Due to broken keyway in flywheel. That's a good start. And spark fine due to clean up of ignition parts. Thanks people for your knowledge and help.. Now a few more questions . I put the muff thingy on to run it. I assume it's that goarse strip just above propeller on the left? But can't see it spraying out like I would Assume it would. Could it have a faulty thermostat? Or is it designed not to spray until motor warms up and thermostat opens? And I have fuel dripping out the air inlet on carb.. Motor seems to run fine thou... I have pulled carb apart and cleaned but no joy as of yet. Once again your help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks heaps for your advice. How do I access the impeller? Obviously the water pump? What would cause the carb to pour fuel? Float valve not shutting? Not sure a About gear oil will check. That's obviously down where the diff is to the propeller?

If you don't have one already buy an OMC Service manual for your motor. Much easier to fix things with it and a lot cheaper than trial and error.

Is that the link for retarding or advanceing of ignition timing? Question. Where should the water that ejected from the motor be coming out? I'm expecting to see it squirting out as I have seen on newer motors.
