help with PDS

Wow, lots of good info, wish I had found this site earlier. I just replaced the 2 bearings and seals in my PDS, went smooth I thought. My problem is, like a dumbass, I filled the housing with gear lube not grease! Is there any way I can properly grease the bearings with out removing the seals. O yah the new motors is already in and the drive reinstalled.
 
None that I am aware of. .... and how in the heck did you add gear oil to the Flywheel Cover PDS cavity?????

NOTE: The PDS bearings and seal system is NOT designed to contain gear oil.
The FWD seal may hold gear oil for a short while, but the AFT seal forms it's contact with the OD of the Universal Shaft Female Yoke.
The PDS and Female Yoke splines are "Capped" only by a dust cover that is NOT designed to contain gear oil..... it will leak at this point.

Assuming that this is a Double Bearing PDS, these bearings require grease, not only grease, but that the housing be "Pre-Filled" with grease (while rotating the PDS) until we see grease come through the ball cages, and prior to installing the two seals.
ONLY when we see grease come through the ball cages, do we install the seals.

NOTE: The foward seal must be glued into position, or future grease pressure may dislodge it from the bore.
Aft-most seal is to be installed in the "non-conventional" direction (lip tension spring visible from AFT).

Gear oil will reduce the viscosity of the grease, and will do so rather quickly.
Even mixing un-like greases (chemical incompatability) will damage the grease viscosity.

Yes..... too bad that you did not find this site earlier.

If I were you, I'd be pulling this all back apart, and doing it correctly.
A failure here can take out the flywheel cover bellows snout....., the Universal shaft....., and in extreme cases, the front clamping collar of the transmission.

Choices:
Disregard this...... and risk an expensive failure.
Correct this...... and go boating. :D


Sorry if this sounds harsh..... but I repair these, and I've seen the various types of damage that can be caused.

thanks rick, Thats what I thought I was going to hear. Believe me it wasnt easy to get gear lube through that little hole! Guess now my only choice is to rollup the sleeves and get dirty. Really appreciate your help
 
Yeah, I'm sorry to have been the barer of bad news, but I had to be truthful.

You'll get it..... and you'll be glad that you did. In fact, you'll never really know exactly how glad you will be. :D
 
The only good thing is you've done it before. If your PDS can come out aft, like mine does, you'll only have to take the transmission off. Shouldn't take more than a few hours.
