" I bought a dream boat for $550 - wood over fiberglass 15 foot with a 40 HP Evinrude.
When I got it running I took it out on a lake, but it would not sustain high speed. When I gave it full throtle, gradually or otherwise, it would hesitate - speed up, hold for a second or two, and then come back to idle or slow speed.
I replaced the fuel pump and lines and rebuilt the carburetor reducing the size of the high speed jet (fixed) from 64/1000 to 60/1000 (I live at 7000 feet above sea level and was advised to do this)
None of the above helped. I then discovered that one of the spark plug sockets was partially stripped preventing me from tightening the plug all the way. I subsequently noticed some oil staining immediately underneath the plug. The question is this? Should I use a helicoil insert in the socket, or do i need to search for a new head? Also would that have been the cause of my problem? "
