Help with motor year

I have a Mariner 30E. 689 40956 then it has made In Japan this has been in my wife family and we trying to fix it but anyone in the family that could tell us anything have long gone so can we please have some help thank y'all I will be asking questions along the way on fixing it
 
Seems you might be missing one number in the serail number as everything listed in the charts suggests there be 6 numbers vs your 5 number of 40956... but if yours really starts out with 409 then it ought to be an 1983-year model.
