Help with engine stalling

I have 1996 Glastron boat with a Mercruiser 3.0 engine.

Last year, I had issues with debris in my boat’s gas tank that was causing my pickup tube to clog up and stall the boat. With all of your help, I diagnosed the problem by running the boat from an auxiliary gas tank. When I ran the boat with that tank, and took it out on the lake, everything was perfect.

I cleaned the debris out of the tank and install a new pickup tube and fuel sender.

Since then, I’ve started the boat a few times. It ran a little rough at first, but when it warmed up, it ran fine. However, I had not taken it out from a run on the lake.

In the last couple of months, I’ve started it and it ran fine, but I still hadn’t taken it out on the lake for a run.

Last weekend, I started it and it ran fine at high speed and idle. So, I decided to take it out on the lake.

Things started out fine, but within a minute or two, when I tried to turn the boat, it stalled and I couldn’t restart it. It sounded like it wasn’t getting enough gas. I tried to start it a number of times, but I just couldn’t keep it running. Finally, when I got it started at a high RPM, I kept pumping the accelerator real fast and it would keep running haltingly. I was able to got it back to my dock with that method.

Once I got it back to my dock, I replaced the carburetor with one that I had rebuilt. That made no difference. It acted the same as the original carburetor. I bypassed the water-fuel separator, but that made no difference. I ran the boat from the auxiliary fuel tank and no difference. I replaced the filter on the fuel pump and still no difference.

This week I installed a new fuel pump and no difference. I removed the gas cap, and that make no difference. I ran the boat from the auxiliary tank again with new gas and some Sea Foam and no difference.

The boat will start and run at 2200 rpm, but when I lower the engine speed, it stalls out like it’s not getting enough gas.

I’m thinking of rebuilding the original carburetor and reinstalling it.

I’m at a loss, and don’t know what else to do.

Thanks in advance for your expertise and help.

Jeff,

Thank you for the response. I've tried running from an outboard tank with new gas and Sea Foam (I called it an auxiliary tank). It still ran the same. I was hoping it was that too.

Jeff,

You might be right. How long do you think it would take to burn the gas that's in the carburetor bowl before it starts drawing the new gas from the outboard tank?

Jim, try removing the carburetor and carefully and gently turn it upside down over a container. That will drain it of the old fuel.
Reinstall with a new base gasket.

If that does not render any good results, try using the P of E.... process of elimination..... by testing/replacing one item only at a time.
Make yourself a list of potential areas to test/check.
