Help with a Vintage Tach

Looking for help with what I believe are original gauges on my 1973 Glastron V156 with a 1973 Evinrude Lark 50hp motor. I like the look of the combo, and the speedometer works, would like to keep this matching Tach also, if I can get it to work.
It has a yellow and black wire only coming from it, mysteriously disconnected and tucked up behind the dash. Control box has the gray sending wire coming out of it unconnected . Have the jumper wire on the tach connected as described in instruction sticker on tach and in photo.
I have tried connecting gray sender to yellow, and black to ground.......nothing.
Questions: I have a multimeter, how can I verify first that I have a tach signal from gray wire ? Then, any other suggestions on yellow and black wire connections from tach ?
Also, is there any maintenance I can do on the tach itself ? I can see some corrosion through the glass at the bottom of the needle. I know I could just buy a aftermarket tach, but I really like the vintage and matching-ness of the set in the boat now.

Thanks, looking for some more help first troubleshooting the gray sender wire from control box, how do I test that with my multimeter to know if I have a signal there ? And the tach with just 2 wires seems like not enough ? Yellow to gray sender, black to ground ? Or black to power ?
