"I'm not sure of the year but the serial # is OD293818. The problem. The motor starts fine with the prime switch pulled out but after pushing back in it chokes out. I noticed that even after running for a while the water from the outlet is lukewarm at best. At one point I heard a click, and the motor ran fine with the primer pushed in, but after turning it off and restarting it, the problem continued. My question is this. If the thermostat is failing and the motor is not reaching operating temperature, could that cause the choke to fail to open? Thanks for any suggestions. Ed K."

"Ed, that is a 1994 Mercury Mariner - outstanding motor.

Having to keep the choke pulled indicates a partially clogged carb - it needs to be removed, disassembled and cleaned. A kit wouldn't hurt either (new needle valves, gaskets and seals).

This motor will not have a thermostat unless someone installed it after the fact. They shipped from the factory without them (saved Merc maybe 50 cents a motor) but they are equipped to have one.

The "lukewarm" is a good thing, sounds like it's cooling as it should. The choke on these is completely manual, so operating temp or not will not affect it's operation.

It is possible that the "click" you heard was a slightly stuck linkage to the trigger advance. The trigger (kinda slides back and forth) to keep the timing correct, but I really would suspect the carb first.

Alternately, try pumping the fuel bulb with the choke all the way in and see if that makes a difference. The fuel pump is part of the carb and it could have a bad diaphram (which I think is part of the complete carb kit)...."
