"I recently aquired a 40hp Mariner outboard. Model number on it is 40ELO and the other numbers on the engine plate are 6E9 L 450757. First question is what year is this motor? Now the real problem is that the overheat buzzer goes off. When we started out at a low speed it was fine but when i first opened it up it started buzzing. I took the cover off the motor and the motor itself did not feel in the leas bit hot. I was able to place my hand on anypart of the motor with no problems. The engine continued to do this the rest of the day. If we ran slow it was fine for a while, but as soon as you opened up the throttle it would beep. The tell-tale hole had a steady stream and there was no noticable smoke coming from the motor. No unusual burning smells, and the engine sounded fine. Could it be a bad sensor, or is it possible its just begining to overheat and i shut it down before the outside of the engine is hot? I'd like to order a repair manual but i have to find out what year first."

"From what I can tell it's a 1987 and it should have oil injection, does this one? Also what does the alarm sound like, normally on these a steady beep is the overheat and an intermmitant beep is the low oil alarm."

"What I would do is find the sender, should be on the back or the side of the block with probably only a single wire on it. Disconnect the wire and see if that kills the alarm, if it does it's most likely a bad sender, if it doesn't then the problem could be in the alarm module. If it looks like the sender you should be able to remove it and remember it's just like a switch so with a multimeter you can check it for continuity with a lead on each end of it. Should only have continuity through it when it's hot not cold."
