Help with 1958 18 hp

Installed a new impeller and having trouble getting the lower unit back up and in. should it be in gear when putting it back in ?

was it in gear on removal?gently slide it back in,and if in wrong gear,youll have to alter the selector to get right gear,when re installing.have outboard max elevation,and try turning flywheel a bit

Operating the shift lever will only raise and lower the shift rod. Make sure the water tube and shift rod are aligned, then raise lower unit until the drive shaft connects with the splines in the motor. Rotate the prop clockwise to align the splines, this may be a little tight with the new impeller. I do this with the shift lever and shift rod in the lower unit in forward. Once I get the shift rod connected and the big bolt started I check the water tube, then use the four little bolts to raise the lower unit the rest of the way. Sometimes it takes a little fittling, but once you figure it out you'll be able to take it on and off with little trouble. Dont forget a little dab of grease on the splines of the drive shaft.
