help wanted please with my mercury 50hp

hi all, could anyone help me as im in need of finding out info about my outboard! its a 50hp mercury that i got with my boat recently and there is no serial number on it anywhere!! is there any way of finding out info any other way than the serial number? also the engine wont fully rev when in gear and it splutters like its missing on a cylinder! iv checked pressure and all 3 are at 120psi and iv replaced the fuel diafram in the pump, and all 3 spark plugs are new. any help would be gratefully received.
 
does it smoke excessively ? do wires look good ? have you checked fuel filter ? does it run any better when you pump primer ball while running ?
 
it only smokes as much as a 2 stroke should! wires seem ok but not really gone through the whole thing? fuel filter seems fine and no different when primer ball is pumped!!
 
Post a pic. it may help with identifying your outboard.What type of decals? Look for a small silver disc,like a frost plug,on the side of the block near the carbs,there should be a number on it. Can you get a number of the carbs?Might help in pinpointing the age .
And at a guess,pull the carbs,strip them and give them a good soaking in carb cleaner,not the rubber/plastic bits.Blow air through

Sure it revs fine in neutral! They all do. You need to put it on a boat and run it. THEN you may find it has a dead cylinder under load.
