help to remove engine from a bayliner

I need to pull a engine out of a bayliner. I need some help on seperating the [h=3]Mercruiser final drive from the engine. I am new to working on boats so sorry if my questions are dumb.[/h]
Thanks

assuming this is an Alpha One drive, put the shifter in forward gear, unhook trim rams etc. undo six nuts on the upper part and it should slide off, also needs to remain in forward gear when going back on, its tricky going back on unless you know what you are doing. might consider buying a manual or getting help from somebody with experience when going back on

That's what I got from this too, Bill. Not the drive removal, but engine removal!

You've got a choice for removal.
You can separate the engine from the flywheel cover just as you would separate an auto engine from a bell housing or automatic transmission.
This will free up the rear of the engine.
The front engine mount lag bolts will also need to be removed.
Now you're free to pull the engine leaving the flywheel cover attached to the inner transom plate.

Alternate:

Leave the flywheel cover attached to the engine, and remove the two rear engine mounts at the flywheel cover where it joins the inner transom plate.
Now the engine will come out with the flywheel cover still attached to it.
With this scenario, the engine must come forward enough to clear the drive shaft from the egine drive coupler.

Here's the catch when going back in:

When going back in (and with a typical Merc stern drive) the propeller shaft (techincally called a propeller shaft) will need to be lifted and aligned
with the engine drive coupler. This is nearly impossible without removing the drive.
Also, engine coupler alignment must be checked and re-adusted, of which means the drive must be removed anyway.

Does that help?

Concord, you may be right, and I can see where you got that.
However, he does say "from the engine". Perhaps he means "from the transom or Gimbal housing".

Like said, he can remove the engine while the drive is still in place.... it's going back in when he'll need to have the drive removed.

Bill, some days it's like this;

Look at your HIN (hull identification number) at the stern of the boat... this will give you the year model.
Look for the serial number on the engine.... this will tell you which model engine it is.
See if there is a serial number somewhere on the out drive.

Take several photos of your engine/drive and post them here.

There's little to no sense in pulling the engine if you know nothing about the stern drive.

dont use a cherry picker unless you have a high standing, sturdy tree. I used a tractor and recovery straps to hoist my buick out.
