Help, think I really broke something

I will start off by saying that I am very new to boats. I have owned my boat (1989 Sea Ray 160) for about 1 month now. Mercruiser 3.0 with Alpha One. I was having problems with the throttle sticking so tonight we put the earmuffs (correct name? I dunno) on the outdrive, fired up the engine and was using just a small amount on the carb to try to get it cleaned up a bit. Anyway, water was flowing fine. I then kicked the throttle just a little bit (maybe 2200 RPMS) and all of a sudden it quit taking water and a horrible noise started coming from what sounded like behind the engine. I took the belts off and spun the water pump by hand and it spun freely and didn't make any noise. Could this just be the outdrive water pump needed rebuilt or did I most likely mess something up even more serious?
 
Time to remove the cap from the upper unit on the out drive. A 3/8 12 point socket and a rubber mallet will do the job. Take a look at the gear set or what is left of the gear set. If all looks good. Let us know and we will advise you further.

Got a schmatic of exactly where to take the cap off? I can get a look at the gears without completely dropping the out drive?
