help......temp guage not working

let me start off by sayyinbg that i am new to boats and marine engines but new to engines. now with that being said i am lost here. i have a 1988 sunchaser 17ft with a mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1. got her home and doing some checks on things and making sure everything thing is good to go before putting it on the water. i am down to two issues, i think i have one figured out but the one that i am a loss with is the temp guage isnot working at all. i had her running on muffs for about 10-15 min and it was at about a 1500 rpm idle (that is the other issue that i think i have figured out) and figured that my temp guage should at least be reading something. well it was not, looked like the motor was stone cold. i am hoping that it is somthing like wire came off or somthing like that but i do not know where the sending unit is on this motor . first question is where is that at? how long do you need to let a motor run to warm up on muffs? any help here is greatly appreciated and many thanks

Gound the sending wire on the engine w/key on run; it should peg the gauge needle. That proves the circuit and gauge work. It may have a defective or missing thermostat or temp. sender is dead.

ok will do i know it is not on the manifold as i have had that off already and didnt not see it on there what part of the block is it located on?? what should it be next to??

It's been too many years since I have seen a 4 banger; look for it on the intake or somewhere in the water jacket.

Chiefalen where is the temp. sender on a 3.0L?

well i do know this much it is not on the mainfold as i have had that off already. with me being a driver i have a lot of time to sit and think. after getting the pick of what it looked like i recall seeing somthing that looked like the top end of that just below the what i think is the theromstat housing if that is the case then it will be easy to get to. next question is do i have to use a mercruiser or can i use one from an auto parts store on somthing like this?? and many thanks in advance as this forum and a nother one that i am a member have been great help
