Help - Rookie Question

I have 1994 Mercury Mariner 40 HP that won't start. It doesn't sound like it is firing at all. I don't know if it is getting gas or spark. I took off the engine cover but I don't know where to spray the starter fluid, or if it is even possible to spray starter fluid into this motor.

Like I was saying, I am a real rookie so any help or pictures would be most appreciated!!!

Let me know how you get on. Starter fluid can be sprayed in the plastic silencer/ air box that is normally on the front with two strokes and the side with four strokes.

Pull plug to see if they are wet with gas and oil,get/make a spark tester and see if spark can jump 3/8". Starter fluid not really recommended for 2stroke,no oil,but if plenty of fuel mix pumped in, a blast or two will do no harm
