Help Reverse wont work

"Shifter moves but engine wont go into reverse. Where can I start to find the problem, would like to fix myself."

Motor is a 1980 Evinrude 115hp

Motor is a 1980 Evinrude 115hp. Even after disconnecting the linkage and manually shifting the lever to reverse it still acts like it's in neutral.

"More info. I can manually shift the motor into reverse, spin the prop by hand and the motor turns. However, when I start the motor and attempt to shift into reverse the prop will not turn. This doesn't make sense to me."

Have you checked the gear oil

Have you checked the gear oil in the lower unit???

Checked it before all this tro

Checked it before all this trouble started. Oil level was fine and no evidence of water.
