"I have a Mercury 9.8 with serial # 7144141 and would like to order a maintenance manual. Can anyone help with dating this motor?
Also, where is the best place to get a manual?

"That's a Canadian serial

"That's a Canadian serial which makes it difficult to nail down exactly. Merc in Mississauga kept horrible records (or at least never shared them).

Based on that serial and my scattered Cdn Merc lists would say it's probably either a 77, 78 or 79 model.

If it has "model 110" sticker on it, it's probably late 77 or early 78 if it's simply a "9.8" then 79.

In either case an excellent manual for regular maint all the way up to a total rebuild is Selocs "1404" for 1965-1989 1 and 2 cylinder models.

Available in printed form or electronic form for about 35 bucks - sold at most marine places or this website (see top right of this screen)."
