I have a 1988 80 horse merc. a

I have a 1988 80 horse merc. and I can'y seem to get it to plane.I have replace the fuel filter and still nothing.Some of my friends say it could be the fuel pump or the sparkplugs or coil.Not haveing the money to take it to the shop I was hopeing anyone here might be abel to help. Any feedback will be most helpful.Thanks

"you can see if its the fuel pump by using the primer ball in the fuel line. you just want to keep the ball firm - don't be too agressive as it will flood the carbs if too much pressure is used.

Check the plugs by inspection - replacing them isn't a bad idea if you don't know when it was last done.

also, go to the local library - they should a seloc or clymer manual that will get you some specifics for that engine.

Could also be the switch boxes but they require a DVA to test."

"I have a Montgomery Wards out board that we can't find out what year it is etc. The model# is: 60-28925 Serial# 435728 We have been told that it should have two or three letters in front of the model number, but it does not. As near as we can figure out it is a 5 hp. and may be 1969 vintage. It is a one cylinder. Whoever can help, please do so.
