Help on installing wear pads

Hi I have a alpha 1 gen 2 . My right side wear pad is missing. My questions are how important are the wear pads and is it possible to install them while the boat is in the water. I tried to install the right side wear pad today while the boat is in the water and couldn't do it. Thanks,Bill

Are you talking about the anodes

No the wear pads snap on to the lower unit between that and the gimbal ring.They are made of hard plastic.

They just snap in, but I changed mine when I had the outdrive on a stand.

If I remember correctly the front side has a tab that slides into a slot and then a larger tab that sticks into a hole. I greased the one that goes into the hole to make it easier, fit pretty tight. I had to put a lot of pressure sliding it to the back and then pushing into the hole. I'd say it would be rather difficult in the water.

Sounds like quite the head ache. Might just need to give it a little more elbow grease.
