"I have just finished putting

"I have just finished putting my AQ130C back together after blowing a head gasket. During the re-build process I checked the main bearings and have therefore adjusted the crank in relation to the distributor (I marked where the distributer goes, but it does not help if you rotate the engine when the distributor is out!). I have tried following the manual to get the timing right and I am getting nowhere. I am getting either backfiring through the exhaust or backfiring through the carbs.

I have reset the timing with the rocker cover off so that I can ensure I do not have the engine 180 out, and to ensure all the valves are doing what they are supposed to do. I have also tried to adjust the distibutor either side of TDC and attempted to align the distributor with 12 degress BTDC as per the manual, with no luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, it would be handy if anyone knows what the timing marks mean on this engine, as they are not explained in the book."

You are 180 out. Common error

You are 180 out. Common error when you find TDC on the first stroke (intake) and set the dist there (backfire). You want the spark on the third stroke (power). You can pull the dist or swap the leads I would swap leads to test. Timing marks should be 0 10 20 30 with marks between them.

"Thanks Gill. I will give it

"Thanks Gill. I will give it a go. I was confident that I had it correct as I rotated the engine to get TDC after the intake valve had closed and on what I expected to be the commpression stroke.

If I do not figure this out soon, I think the neighbours will be calling the police; the backfiring is definatley giving them a scare."
