Help needed with b82 50hp yamaha please

i have an 1982 yamaha 50ce outboard which wont start!
it has a spark,turns over but seems to flood on the lower cylinder all the time, i have removed carbs checked and cleaned the float valves,checked floats for leaks e.t.c.
it will spin over for about 20 sec's then kick back and backfire then spin for another few sec's and backfire again, could it be a timing problem?
any tips on making sure i have the throttle/advance linkage set correctly?
also will this motor run without the rectifier fitted and working? this was faulty so i have disconnected it pending the arrival of a replacement unit.

check your sheer pin at the f

check your sheer pin at the fly wheel not sure about the rectifer but pull the fly wheel and check that sheer pin and then we can go from there

You were spot on! found out by trial and error yesterday, that engine ran (lumpy)when leads were reversed!! and traced fault back to that woodruff key on the flywheel having sheared, looks like it had been like that for sometime too, probably why we had picked up boat & engine cheap in the first place. runs fine now its all together correctly,
timing seems to be at tdc to start and approx 24'btdc at full throttle, does this sound correct?
