Help needed Johnson 30 1984 pee stream not working

Hi,

I got this motor after it had been sat for 6 years so it has been lots of work so far to get it right. After many hours of fixing stuff i got the engine running. However no pee stream !!!

so i buy a full impeller kit and fit it according to the manual (i did have two small orings left over but they were not listed in the manual ??? )

so i put it back together after fixing the bearings and seals in the foot and pressure testing the foot.

still no pee stream

so i take it back off and use a water pump to pump flushing fluid round the system for an hour or two. water happly squrts out of the pee hole when pumped by my pump.

reattach the foot and again nothing

so i figure i must have done something with the impeller install wrong

here is exactly what i did starting from where everything is cleaned and ready to go.

1. installed new o ring below the metal case for impeller
2. installed metal case for impeller with tabs correct and checked it seated flush
3. installed new o ring's for both the bit where it connects to the end of the water pipe and also the gear rod
4. installed the rubber seal (like o ring but long and thin and shaped) in the pump housing.
5. used small amount of gasket seal on foot
6. put gasket the correct way around on foot
7. put gasket seal on other side of gasket
8. put metal plate in (correct way round)
9. used small amount of marine grease in metal impeller housing
10. applied a very small amount of gasket seal to rest of impeller housing
11. use a tiny bit of grease to stick the impeller key to drive shaft ( the correct way round)
12. greased drive shaft
13. pushed impeller down drive shaft and engaged key (removed excess grease)
14 put pump housing over impeller and pushed down on housing while rotating drive shaft clockwise
15 did up bolts for pump housing while rotating drive shaft clockwise from time to time.

So this is where i am stuck not sure why my i am getting no water ? anyone more experienced with outboards want to suggest what i could check next or point out the stupid error i may have made. I am a motorcycle mechanic so i am the first to admit i could have done something wrong here. Please help this is the last thing before the boat is back on the water and i got three kids looking at me asking when daddy will mend the boat

thanks in advance

Just for giggles, run a weedwhacker line up the pee hole and see if there is some kind of obstruction; other than that the gurus will have to give more thoughts. Good luck

as i stated i flushed the whole system and water comes out the pee hole when i use the water pump attached to the input pipe with the foot removed. I belive this should prove that the fault is with the impeller / water pump that is part of the foot

Are you sure the tube is going into the pump housing when you reinstall the lower unit?
And...if you running in a barrel, is it submerged deep enough? I always make sure mine is at least past the anti cavitation plate.

Yes i believe the water level is high enough it is basically at the level of where the foot joins the engine.

As for am i sure the pipe is connected that is where i am not sure it seems very difficult to insure it goes in after you line it up. My plan for tomorrow is to take the foot off and put a pipe in the output from the pump then spin the drive shaft with a drill (slowly) then hopefully i will be able to see if the pump is working.

If the pump is working then it has to be that pipe I think there is a chance it is slightly bent ?? as it does not seem to go in far.

i can just see it line up but it does not push into the pump before i loose site of it because the gap is gone between the foot and the top part.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal / give me a tip to insure it lined up correctly ???

Im able to barely fit my fingers in there and feel it start in the hole in the housng.. then carefully, being sure not to move it, get my fingers out and finish going up with it. But from what youre describing that may not work. Sounds like its too short for that. It may well be bent a little. I cant offer any tips on bending that straighter without a major disassembly. ....maybe someone can. Thats all I can offer you. Good luck.

Also be sure the exhaust gasket is in place and secure. I had one slip when installing the lower unit and the back pressure from the exhaust forced exhaust gas in to the water pump displacing any water.

Thank you so much for your replies It is fixed and running fine and its thanks to you guys for your suggestions. !!!

So here is what i did just incase anyone else has similar issues.

1. took foot back off this morning
2. placed foot in a bucket and attached an electric drill to drive shaft
3. taking great care not to run it to fast or to damage the splines i span the drive shaft clockwise with the drill
4. This proved the water pump was indeed pumping well.

5. next i used some blue die and put it right on the very end of the output rubber then pushed the foot all the way back into the engine
6. then removed foot and shone a torch on the end of the water tube
7. result the die was only on the very very tip which shows it was not making a connection
8. with great care i then started to investigate the tube and tried to find why it was shorter than it needed to be
9. Two hours later i had straightened the tube using some long thin steal plate offcuts
10 tested the pipe again with the external pump to insue i had not broken the pipe (all ok)
11. applied very small amount of grease to both pump output rubber and end of water pipe
12. reinstalled again (this time i could see it engage with the rubber output gasket from the pump)
13. made a new exhaust gasket and reattached the exhaust (just to be sure as old gasket was screwed and i read here that can cause issues)
14. filled up test tank and allowed it extra 2 inches of depth
15. started and watched a very healthy pee stream
16. ran it for 10 mins monitoring temp and everything worked well
17. checked charging circuit and was finally able to prove my repairs to the system worked perfectly.

Then i decided to investigate a slight click i felt when steering only to discover that the plastic part of the steering assembly was cracked almost in half. So tomorrow i will plastic weld and pin it back together (finally something i do know how to do ie same as fixing cracked plastics on old motorcycles) also while everything was apart i decided to repaint the dashboard and tidy it up so that is now in the garage drying waiting for me to put it back together tomorrow

Well done. I appreciate good old fashioned mechanical ingenuity. Sometimes thats all you have...sometimes thats all you need...
