Help needed identifying and servicing engine.

Hello all,

I've traded a small polyester tub for some cases of beer :)
It has a 15 hp Evinrude engine and it even runs. (Been standing still for at least 4 years)
But before I dive into the Dutch lakes I want to do a little checkup/tuneup/maintenance.

The first thing on my to do list it to find out what model engine I've got. This will make sourcing parts and finding info much easier.
So far all I know is that it's a 15 hp two cylinder two stroke engine and I think it has an electronic ignition.
Unfortunately some previous owner removed the serial numbers for some odd reason.
I'm posting a few pictures below, hopefully someone will be able to identify this engine from these images.

As you can see from the images someone has done a bit of creative tinkering.
It looks like they made a mechanical stop to keep the engine from over revving because of the governor spring mount broke out of the engine housing.
Correct my if I'm wrong since my only experience with 2 stoke engines is my lawnmower.
Also, note the creative usage of garden hose . :)

After identifying the engine I want to compile a list of all things that need to be serviced.
Within reason off course. I've bought it for a few cases of beer I'm not going to rebuild the block.
So far I've come up with the following: Get some new spark plugs. Replace the fuel filter and air filter.
Any help and tips extending my to do list and identifying this old lump would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Wobbe

ps. I will post more pictures if needed.

Looks to be an 87 / 88 model and it needs LOTS and LOTS of work.--Looks like it was set-up with some sort of remote throttle control and the spring is simply there to return it to an idle speed.-----The white bracket is an idle stop to keep it from stalling.-------Look like a " parts only " motor to me.

Thanks for your replies.

Replacing the impeller is that a big job? It seem to work just fine. Well, at least it did spit out some water from the top of the engine.

@raceronel scrapping for parts is not an option/ I ain't going to row! Even with todays gas prices :)

The boat did come with throttle and direction control box. There is also something that seems to be a kill switch.

A bit more info: The engine did run in 2 or 3 pulls after I pored some gas down the carburetor. It's a bid rough do. I've got an small movie on my phone that I'll upload to youtube tomorrow.
Compression on the upper cylinder is about 93 psi the lower one around 117 psi. Too much difference for my taste. :(
There is also a lot of slack in the starter cable. 30-40 before it engages the flywheel. The cable return spring has also seen better days. So I probably need to fix/replace the pull starter unit.

Thanks kimcrwbr1 for having a little faith in my engine :)

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable taking apart the head.
But I will be pulling apart the starter since it does need a new cable. Do I need to remove the flywheel before I can take out the starter assembly?

I've just uploaded the videos. Here are the links.

(Before anyone starts shouting abuse; It was idling for about 3 to 4 minutes before we gave it a bit of stick.)

Well, not really going to shout so I will say this in lower case..............

Your water pump is not pumping even with the garden hose attachment in a full tub of water. You have a blockage somewhere, probably the remains of the water pump impellor in there somewhere.

Even more quietly I must say that the over revs has set this motor back in its expected useable life.

Maybe a carton of beer but some respect should be shown?

Parts Motor!

How do you tell that the water pump is not working?
There is clearly some water coming from the top of the engine so there is some pumping going on.
Could it be that thermostat is still closed or blocked?
What should a normal operation engine look like. Lots of water blowing out of the top of the engine all the time?

ps. Beer comes in crates over here :)

It still looks a parts motor to me unless you pull it down and check it out properly.

Heineken indeed.......................we do knock off brewed down here, it is nasty, prefer the real import.

I'll warm up the engine do a dry and a wet compression test this evening. (If it ain't raining)
Advancing the timing? I thought this would be done automatically.

I think there must have been some gunk in the engine because my clear tab water is pretty dirty now.
Could I add something to the water to clean out the engine? Add some soap for a nice bubbly effect :)

@kimcrwbr1, I says 100:1 at the fuel line connector. So this is what I used more or less.

It says that , but there was a bulletin handed out by the factory to remove and ignore that wee sticker ages ago.--------------50 : 1 is the correct mix !!!!!!
