Hey guys been looking all over the place for answers and can't seem to find what I am looking for.. I have a 84 mfg with a 165 merc with an mc1 the boat was in storage for a few year been posting alot about it. So we finally got it out this weekend ran like a brand new motor thanks to the guys on here.. now the problem pull the boat out after a couple hours pulled the plug and a far bit of water came out I thought maybe the plug was the problem as I might have seal the new one in with the wrong stuff.so I thought I would put alittle water in the bielge see if it was that and found that water was coming out from the bottom of the gimble. Checked the intagraty of the transom solid as a rock... what are my options to fixing.when I pull up on the leg I can see the gimble move ever so slight should I try to tighten it or use some sort of sealer on it I don't wanna put the boat aside as the season just started here any help would be great thanks guys

Ayuh,..... Where, Exactly is this,..??

'tween the fiberglass, 'n the transom assembly,..??
Or somewhere on the transom assembly,..??

Serial on the motor is 4663122 don't know if that helps and if u look at the back of the boat just above the plug were the anoids are the water runs down the fiberglass I will see if I can find the number on the actual outdrive and snap a pick but there is alot of paint

Any leakage from here indicates a rotted/ loose transom

Hey guys thanks for all the help I am about ready to pop the motor today was wondering if I should unbolt it from the stringers and leave the mounts on the motor or just unbolt the mounts and leave them in the boat

Thanks

being a straight 6 cylinder. remove the lags/bolts and leave the front mount on the motor. Makes for a good stand too

Well she is on a skid in the garage time to rip and tare was that bad had to shorten the chain and flattin the tires to get her high enough but the it just slide over the top now for the fiberglass and new wood thanks again guys for all the help I will post picks as the project gets in full force

When ya put it back together, it might be a good idea to seal the inside plate onto the transom at least as well as the outside.
With all the cases we hear of just the lower part of the transom being rotted---
I think alot of transom rot comes from the ever present few inches of bilge water seeping into the plywood transom board from inside the boat.

Thanks winger after I pulled the gimbel I noticed there was a big rubber seal around the outside that was really brittle.just an update on my progress haven't got much done hasn't been the nicest temps here for the last couple day and with the boat being in direct sun light and me doing asphalt all day haven't been really motivated when getting home I have decide to go poly resin since the hall is made of poly..also have one question since I am here the bilge area looks to have 4x4s on the sides and the front motor brace between do the 4x4s run the span of the hall or just in the bilge area because about 7 inchs of them are soft wondering if I can just slab in a peice for now till I wait till winter when I redo the floor and carpet

Thanks again guys

I'd fix it all and do it right while ya got it apart, rather than plan to go back in later.

Get a new outside gasket or fix the original when it goes back together, and don't be bashful about useing plenty of silicone.
Transom thickness is a fairly critical dimension for the spacing of the inner and outside plates/engine mount.

I hate to recomend something on the 4x4s other than cutting the tops off the 'glass, pulling them out and glass'n in new ones.
Preferably well dried out pressure treated green ones.

Some of my other methods of repair has sent some 'pureists' after me with torches and pitchforks--
like the villagers did when they came after the Frankenstein monster.
For instance:
Years ago, my Dad had a old Starcraft with 4 x 4 or 6 engine mounts under a 351 Ford V8 that ran from the front of the transom,
up several inches in front of the side motor mount. They'd rotted down to wet sawdust.

In a pinch, I put a 4x4 over the gunwales, used a come-a-long to slightly raise the engine. After cutting the top off the 'glassed in boards,
vaccuming out the rott, I poured the 'molds' back full with about $5 worth of concrete and laid in 3-4 rebar rods.
Befored it set, I lowered the engine back down where it belonged, and pushed the lag bolts into the wet cement.
