I have a 1998 Yamaha 4hp 2 stroke motor. Compression is good, new spark plug, carb rebuilt. It has a good flow from the gas tank to the carb.
In neutral the motor runs just fine in a test tank 3x3x4 feet. When put in gear (correct idle speed according to my tachometer) the motor dies. It immediately restarts on the first pull ONLY when choked (motor is warm). When starting it IN gear, the motor has no top end speed (fixed jet in carb). Slowing down to idle IN gear works fine, giving gas again, it dies immediately.
I am an Evinrude man and noticed that there is NO adjustment to synchronize the timing advance with the throttle opening. So, assuming that however the spark is advanced is working, I can only assume that the problem lies in the fuel pump. I can blow through it, but have not taken it apart as there are no replacement parts available here in Germany and the european motor numbers are not listed in the USA websites.
Does anyone have an idea or opinion?
Thanks,
Robin
