"I'm at a loss. Had zero

"I'm at a loss. Had zero compression on the #5 cylinder so suspecting water damage replaced manifolds and risers. Removed both heads and found some minor damage from a leaking riser. Rebuilt both heads, new valves, new lifters and push rods. There was no noticeable damage to any cylinders or pistons - all looked good. Reinstalled heads, manifolds and risors as well as new spark plugs, wires and battery. Can not get engine to start. Found gas in the oil, so removed all oil and replaced along with filter. Removed carburetor and found trash behind the needle. Reinstalled carb and throttle pumps fuel into manifold as it should. I'm getting compression and spark as well but engine does not sound like it wants to start, only turns. Also, it seems to me to be turning too slow despite the new battery. Even with the water damage the engine ran before I rebuilt the heads. I'm at a loss, please help."

"First thing to check with tho

"First thing to check with those symptoms is whether the distributor got installed 180 degrees off. Double, triple check. If it has fuel and compression, the third element is spark -- but it must be delivered at the correct time."

sparkplug firing order?
check

sparkplug firing order?
check the battery cable connections especially the ground on the block

Thanks for the quick responses

Thanks for the quick responses. I did initially have the distributor 180 off but that has been corrected - it is set to TDC on #1 cylinder. Also double-checked the firing order - all wires are going to the correct cylinders.

"As David stated... Spark must

"As David stated... Spark must be deliveried at the correct time.... AND place. Remove wire from coil for this test. Remove #1 plug and put your finger over the plug hole. Crank engine until you feel compression presure pushes your finger away. Then check to see that dist. rotor is pointed at #1 wire and plug, timing mark is near zero/TDC on balancer/pully. Check to make sure #1 is on the CORRECT engine bank. Firing order should be stamped on intake manifold. Recheck firing order. It is NOT 1234678"
