Help me identify this evinrude 9.9HP outboard motor.

Hi all,

I bought this outboard a few years ago but didn't use it much and since then it's been parked somewhere in my shed. It did run well when I bought and tested it at the seller, but after putting it on my boat something seemed off with the throttle. After finishing my last project I decided to find something new to work on. The outboard motor caught my eye and I want to get it running for the next boating season. The registration plate seems to be gone so identifying which year and model this is has been a bit of a struggle. I have searched the internet but decided to post this thread to see if someone more experienced might know what I'm dealing with.

right now the engine doesn't give any spark and I suspect that's because of a loose connector that is can't seem to find a plug for. There are 2 bundles of wires coming from the stator. One is connected to the ECU but the other one has this loose plug on it with no obvious location to go to. I bought 2 new sparksplugs and did a compression test, which seems to be ok.

My questions are:
Can someone tell which year and maybe even which model outboard this is?
What does this extra wire do and where do I connect it?

You have to post a few more times before you can post pictures I think.---Pictures will identify it in mere seconds.

Looks like missing the original stop button. Somebody hooked this rig up and bored a new hole. Does the choke work? Don't see the choke there behind the pull cord? Kinda crazy what some people do, but I'm getting used to it after 60 years in outboard repair.
.

Look here.

Hi Timguy,

Thank you for the quick response

I think the choke works but I haven't had it running in a while. I took it of as I removed the airbox to check for signs of mice droppings. I'm going to clean out the carb and check if the choke works. Do you think that the engine will start / create spark without having the plug on the 3rd picture connected , which I now think is the stop button.

Should be the same motor.----Good guess on the Holland on my part.----The name was a big clue.----Easy to find parts if you know where to look

Hahaha yeah real good guess, Holland is small country so precise as well... I thought my bio might have said something about location but my name is a dead giveaway as well... I will look into a wiring diagram for a 1980's model and figure out what I need to do to get a spark. Thank you for al the help!

CS makes it a 1980 model.

It seems that there is a wire and plug coming from the stator that normally connects to a rectifier / regulator. Since this engine doesn't have a battery or electric starter I don't think its needed. The three wire colors are :

Yellow solid

Yellow / blue stripe

Yellow / grey stripe

Is it possible to get spark without having this plug connected to something? If not how do I get around using it?

I bought new spark plugs but this didn't help. I'm now checking al the connections to ground for rust and removing it. If this doesn't help I can't continue to troubleshoot since I don't know if the three yellow cables have to be connected to something in order for the ignition to give spark.

Next things to check are the ignition coils and then the stator I think ?

Thank you

Occasionally you see an alternator added W/O electric start. I added one on my fishing 15 hp for keeping the battery charged as I have a fish finder and often fish remote areas with no way to charge the battery for days. Someone maybe removed the rectifier, eh? This, of course converts AC to DC. Make sure those wires can't short to ground when motor is running, as damage to alternator will result. This is a valuable unit. If it has been in salt water, likely, I would consider inspecting/replacing thermostat. 1980 is not easily accessible especially if the cover bolts are oxidized. I would also consider head removal to accomplish this job, head gasket may be ugly.
If there is no spark on either cylinder, I might think it's a power pack. Rarely do I find a problem with the primary coil, or trigger. Power packs have stranded me and can fail out in the middle of "no man's land". There can be no warning....motor simply will stop. I have more commonly had one leg drop and you can still get home. Other times, one or both legs will die over winter storage?....which for us here in our latitude is about 5 months.

Ha....not the worst place in the world, brother. But there are better, if you don't mind shoveling some snow. My best friend ever, Walter Booi....his Dad immigrated to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan Canada in 1899. Brilliant tradesman and camp builder/operator. 6'4". Folks from your area are historically quite tall.
