Help making an ID on this motor

Ok so I just bought this boat and the details are a little fuzzy.
The seller told me its a 1956 sportsman? And this is the original 287 AMC V8 can anyone confirm that the motor is a 287 AMC? Or that its original to the boat. Also I have this extra Transmission anyone know what it is or what type of chris craft it goes to, I do not need it and want to sell it to someone who does. Any tips on what numbers to look for in casting on the motor or tranny would be great. Again i'm new to chris crafts and 100% new to boats in general so thank you for your information.

AMC engines are similar to Chevys in that you can not tell CID by looking at them. Yours could be a 250, 287, or 327 CID. I'm guessing your boat is a 17'. What's the hull number? Are the hull sides plywood or planks? The AMC was not an option in your hull.

Mariner's Museum in Newport News VA has all the hull cards for Chris Craft on file. The hull card will tell you what engine and engine serail number your boat was born with, where it was made, when it was made, what factory options it was ordered with and what dealer it was sent to for initial sale to the customer. Depending on what model the boat is they will likely have owner's manuals, drawings, parts lists and engine service manuals. I recently restored a 1965 Chris Craft 20ft fiberglass Sea Skiff and I bought a whole bundle of info from Mariner's for that boat. I found out that way that my boat had it's original Chris Craft 327F engine in it, got parts and service manuals, boat owners manual, drawings, accesory lists and the like from them. All you really need is the hull identification number. If you have a title for the boat you may not even have to find it on the boat. This is my first post so I don't know if the forum will allow links to be posted but I will try...
