"Ok, our bilge pump relay popped and the boat took on salt water for a few days, it was about a foot and a half or so when we noticed it. After I pumped it out I noticed that there was oil mixed in with the water. I started it and ran it to charge up the batteries while I pumped out the water, and a half hour or so later it dawned on me to check the oil, so I checked the dip stick and there a tiny bit of foamy oil on it. I shut off the engine right away, and added 4 quarts or so, only for it to leak right out again...Is there any seals it could have rotted? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!"

"somewhere at the bottom of the block.. My guess is wherever it is had been submerged. Is there a seal/gasket that is known to do this? Prior to this I had never had any oil issues, so I am very confident this had originated from being from being submerged in the salt water. I could try doing a dye test, but wasn't sure if anyone could point me in the right direction, or had experienced this before."

"In a saltwater environment, anything is possible due to rust. Check the oil pan for rust thru, loose pan bolt, if equipped--remote oil drain plug loose, loose oil filter. Use a bright light and hand size mirror for viewing. A mini video camera or digital camera in a steady hand can scan every inch of the engine and then view it on a 57" screen TV. Place a 4' x 4' bed diaper from a drug store under the engine to find the drip point and go from there."

"I checked the pan and drain plug both seem fine.. I was thinking possibly pan gasket? The leak occurs while engine is off, and not leaking under pressure..Making me think that it may be something to do with the pan. Anyhow is this something my insurance would cover under a comp claim, as some wiring had been destroyed as well? "

rear main?... I don't imagine salt does the polished surface of the crank any favours...you just have to do a lot of hanging upside down with the blood rushing to your eyeballs unfortunately...bright flourescent trouble light. no incandescent lights in the bilge.leaks can't be troubleshot over the internet very accurately

I think it would be difficult to prove that saltwater intrusion damaged a gasket. No harm trying.

"The leak occurs while engine is off, and not leaking under pressure."

When the engine is off, all the oil is in the pan and some in the oil filter. If its leaking out with engine off, it has to be coming from a rotted pan. The oil level is lower than the pan gasket and lower than the rear main seal. There is a limited amount that could come from the filter at rest. Unless there is an oil line going to a cooler or remotely mounted filter, I'd be taking a closer look at the pan.

Lesson learned, never buy a salt water boat used again."
