" I need help getting this Johnson 115 to run properly. #4 cylinder is missing. Carbs have been rebuilt, dist cap and rotor replaced, corroded, shorted wires to the cd sensor replaced from connector to dist, repaired from pulse pack to connector. All wiring checked and rechecked. Fuel pump replaced w/ part # 438557 (listing called for 438559, dealer said 438557 should work). Have good, clean properly mixed fuel. Compression is 135 in all cyls. Dealer tested spark w/ spark tester and stated it was OK. I just bought this motor. prior owner states it ran fine when last used July 2000. Could the shoryed sensor wires have damaged the pulse pack and affect only # 4 cyl? It seems to be an ignition problem since I sprayed fuel mix into carb w/ no results. I'm at a total loss right now and looking at your replies to other posts, it seems you've seen quite a bit of strange problems. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Jeff Yoscovits. "

" Sorry Joe, it's a 1969. It has the CD ignition. Most recently the moeor is running terrible. Now it seems to be more than a single cylinder problem. Runs rough at idle cold or hot. Will just shut down. Seems like a cylinder is firng at the wrong time then dies. Pulling wires, the # 4 cylinder is still not playing, although all others seem to be OK. Any ideas where to get a reasonably priced power pack? Thanks, Jeff. "

"Jeff.... Frankly, I've never heard of a powerpack of that type affecting one cylinder. That pack fires one pulse at a time so if it fires at all, it must be taken that it's okay. However it fires that pulse to the single ignition coil, and from there the coil fires to the rotor, and the rotor to each individual s/plug via the distributor cap. If the problem is due to ignition arcing, you can remove the s/plugs and position the plug wires where they cannot fire to ground. Then crank the engine with the ignition switch on. If any spark is arcing to ground at the distributor cap area, you'll be able to hear it and decide what repairs to make at that point. Those type rotors and caps are notorious for arcing out to ground. Yes, I've seen new ones that have been faulty.

It would pay you to rig up some kind of tester to see if you have spark at all the plug terminal boots that would jump a 1/4" gap. This would help you pin point the problem if it is indeed ignition. I know the dealer checked it but you just have to accept his word that it's okay. Better that you check it yourself.

In thinking over what you've said here and before, I have a tendency to lean towards the distributor cap and rotor area.... perhaps the wires that lead from the powerpack to the timer base are frayed inside the insulation to a point whereas they are setting up a make and break action. I have encountered that a few times. Hook a ohm meter up to those wires, then move the timer base back and forth to see if a break exists in those wires.

Also, possibly something was overlooked in the carburetor area... a clogged high speed jet perhaps?

That type powerpack is superceeded by a new type universal pack that lists for about $380.00. I do have one left in stock that I'll be selling for $235.00 but I really think you would be wasting your money. If you want it, fine.... but keep in mind, no refunds <grin>.
