help I have a 1999 30 HP nissan

I am not a outboard mechanic to start but I can't get a spark to my spark pluggs when I have the spark pluggs in. I was told I need a new coil plate assembly. My question is what is on the coil plate assembly? I believe it to have a alternater on one side and a exciter coil on the other. Is that right? I seen where you can buy the parts separatly instead of the whole assembly. Should I just buy the whole coil plate assy. or should I just buy the parts separate and which part is most likely my problem?
 
don't buy anything yet.

go buy a service or repair manual for your motor and buy an average quality ($20) multimeter and make sure that it can test 16v or higher in dc voltage.

follow the instructions in the book for how to test your electrical system and determine what part is actually bad and then you replace it

just change parts blindly by guessing is not the right way to go about fixing things
 
I have had my motor to a nissan repair man and he has done all the testing with a multimeter and he said I need a coil plate assy. I was just wondering if I could save some money and only buy the part of the coil plate assy that is bad instead of the whole assembly.

oh ok then, its hard to say but if he said to buy the assembly then i would go with his recommendation. often parts are replace not jus because they are bad but because it makes more sense o replace all the components that work together as a team so you dont end up going back to change out the other part soon after.

mechanics do things so it is reliable and they don't have to redo the same repair twice, their reputation is based on customers not returning again soon after repairs were made with another issue.

the mechanic doesnt make money based on the parts you buy so he is not telling you to buy parts you do not need but my be telling you to replace the assembly because the other parts in it will soon go ad as well

that said you could just change the bad part by itself if you can buy it separately or if not try a used coil plate assembly from ebay to save money

1. We need your exact model/serial; year means nothing. Yours is likely NS30A4.
2. We need to know the exact electrical characteristics of the exciter before we can condemn it.
