Help fuel starvation volvo v8

Hi I have a volvo penta 5.0ho engine on my 1995 fourwinns 205 sundowner. I'm having a major headache with fuel starvation to the carb yet I have checked everything and am banging my head against a wall. I have checked the line from tank to filter and flows fine, replaced the filter primed and filled with fuel, removed fuel pump and tested and thanks to a face full of petrol appears fine. I then replaced the mechanical fuel pump and unscrewed the line to the carb, cranked the engine and zilch absolutely nothing comes through, i even went to the effort to buy a borescope to ensure the cam was at its highest before installing the fuel pump to ensure i wasn't slipping the pump lever over the cam. I am now all out of ideas and don't know where to turn, any advice would be much appreciated

Is the vacuum side of fuel pump collapsing fuel line? Is cam lobe worn down that fuel pump lever rides on,thus compromising full throw of lever, have seen it!

Face full of petrol would seem to indicate things at least reasonable before the pump... "replaced the mechanical pump....nothing comes through." How long did you crank before you gave up? Mech pumps can take a few complete revolutions of the crankshaft to get primed. Could be defective pump even if new. Remove pump, leave lines connected ( or reconnect as required) and cycle the pump arm to see if it pumps. Did you check for stuck carb float valve? I've had issues with pre-ethanol engine float needle synthetic tips getting gummy and "sticking" closed even with float dropped asking for fuel.

I would once again suggest using the ole P of E (process of elimination).
Fully test one item, and one item ONLY at a time, moving to the next item ONLY after giving that item a clean bill of health or after having replaced that item!

The P of E when used systematically and methodically will not let you down! :D

1.... have you removed the fuel tank dip tube (aka pick up tube) and looked at the screen?
2.... have you noticed any fuel line interior delamination occuring? (replace if questionable)
3.... any restrictions within the fuel filter base unit?
4.... is the base unit plumbed correctly (i.e., directionally)?
5.... have other issues been ruled out?

.

Thank you all for your help, after much checking and rechecking I have attached a clear fuel line to the inlet of the fuel pump and put the other end in a tub of petrol, and discovered that the fuel pump is drawing the fuel about five inches up the line and then blowing it back out. Would this indicate a defective fuel pump?
