"I just purchased a 1987 bayliner capri 1400 with a force 50hp. It got it up to about 28 mph the first time I took it out,but the idle was off and it got adjusted but now it wont go over 10mph? any ideas?"

"Adjusting the idle should not

"Adjusting the idle should not have done anything to your top end, Are you sure it was the idle screw you adjusted? Idle is adjusted at the bottom of the throttle tower linkage, it's just a screw with a lock nut on it that presses against the block to turn the tower shaft more or less. If you adjusted something else, please post. adjusting the timing will screw up your performance, but not adjusting the idle. If you did in fact adjust the idle, then check for spark on both cyl, check your fuel delivery, check the plugs while you are at it,."

"I-don't-believe-he-messed-with-the-timing.How-would-I-be-able-to-tell-if-it's-of f?
Also-I-checked-the-fuel-filter,which-seemed-ok,but-don't-really-know-what-else-t o-check!"

"No, turning the flywheel by h

"No, turning the flywheel by hand won't affect the timing, it was really just a thought, you would need a timing light to check the timing, but if it in fact was running good, and the timing was not touched, then it should be fine. Check for spark on both cyl. make sure they are both firing, check compression if that is good, check the fuel pump. Just remember, if you ever crank the motor over while the plugs are out (like for a compression check) you need to make sure you ground the plug wires to the block, not doing so can burn out your ign packs.

Definately check for spark first, maybe a coincidence that a pack went down at the same time you adjusted the idle. You can put a 1/4 inch bolt in the spark plug boot and then hold it close to a good engine ground (not by any fuel) then have someone crank it over to look for a good spark, strong spark should go 3/8 inch or so. You can just leave the plug in the boot and then touch the threaded end of the plug to the block, crank it over and see if there is spark, but a plug can spark even if the spark isn't strong enough for ignition, that's why I would use the bolt."
