"OK, I got the thing to finally turn great. Only thing it that it won't ever fire!! I finally did enough research to see that in a right hand 440 like mine, the distributor will turn counter-clockwise. However, this distributor turns clock-wise, even though the engine is turning the "right" way. Is it possible that I could have a reverse or left hand engine / cam?? If so, can I just rewire the distibutor to fire it right handed, or will it only fire left handed??

I don't know what the hell is going on here- I've rebuilt Fords and Chevys, but this Chrysler I bought rebuilt is kicking my a$$."

"There's 4 firing order configurations. Right and left hand engine rotation with either clockwise or counterclockwise rotor rotation. Figure out what the engine's doing and wire accordingly. One of the recent posts here had a boat site with the 440 manual, which I printed yesterday.

I'm working on an old Bertram with 440's, ripped the wires off one engine and made a little sketch, when I went to double check the firing order, something wasn't right, the rebuilt engines were put back in the wrong sides of the boat! But after some research I discovered they got rid of the 1.9:1 transmisions and put in the 2.1:1's, which spin the opposite way....

I believe the 440 manual shows all 4 firing orders. Good luck!

"i had the same problem with my 318. to fix it, you must run the plug wires to the right cylinder. some engines have the firing order stamped on the manifold. other wise, just google "marine 440 firing order", and you should get some hits. good luck

"Actually I know I do because whenever I try to crank it fuel get's blown out of the carb, and the spark plugs and the exhuast never smell like fuel...."

"Danny, lets first see if the starter is correct, a normal engine (usually called a R.H. because the prop turns right) actually turns CCW when viewed from the rear. On my boat both dist. turm CCW, the backwards engine uses a reverse ground cam and dist. gear to turn it the normal CCW. Mikes books show 4 different firing orders but my books only show 2, I think one is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and I can get the other if you need it.

"Dan, hows it going? I lost your number otherwise I woulda called you! I got them working on getting me the right starter, so it will turn correctly. It should be good once I get it back."

Maybe I can help...everyone ha

Maybe I can help...everyone has helped me so much. My 440 had a diagram staring me in the face all along under the wiring cover...it has four diagrams...it can be a lft or right hand engine that has distributor that turns either way...once we figured out which way mine turned we wired accordingly and it fired right up..We spent 3 hours trying to get firing order right and then there that diagram was...10 minutes later...running like a charm. If you still need it let me know...Rick Statham

"Rick, I got her running but I just need the right water circulating pump. And again, I still don't understand how an engine that turns CW when looking at the front of the block turns a prop rh?? Dan ya got me all confused LOL. The reason I'm still frustrated is because every circ pump I see online show the same exact thing I currently have, and that's not doing anything to keep her cool. I also had to get the starter rebuilt to get the thing started, which leads me to believe they sold me the right starter for a standard engine, but it wouldn't start my "rev" rotation engine. It runs, and I got oil going the right way, but I do think this is reversre rotation."
