Help 57 mercruiser crank start and shuts off

"I ha 5.7 mercruiser 350 and I can start the engine and sooner or later stalls and some times starts and stop right after couple of seconds I put a new electric fuel pump and it still doing the same thing so the problem still going on. sometimes it runs for 30 minutes and shut off or sometimes runs for 45 minutes I shut the engine off and it cranks back up but wont stay on for more than a few seconds.I check the gas and no water, it came out good , and they are bringing gas to it.I eve took the distributor cap out and the rod underneeth it and the whole thing replace and same problem.What can it be.HHHHHelp.."
 
What year Christina? Carb or

What year Christina? Carb or EFI? Does the stalling occur when the engine is at operating temp? When was the last time plugs were replaced?

"Is a 1997.I change the spark plugs and the distributor cap also I change the white piece under the distributor cap and the long piece that goes to the gears and the litle black box atach to it.This engine is a EFI. it starts every day from cold to 165 and then it will not run, but it tries to start.BY the way thanks for helping me and what else can I tell you for you to help me."
 
By the way I have a 2 engine b

By the way I have a 2 engine boat so if I need to I can try parts from the strb side because that side still runs good.

It looks like #1.and it is fuel injected with EFI.and is a two barrel.the year was wrong is a 1997.I can wait for fresh Ideas Iamout fo them.

"Check the alternator, if it is not putting out a correct amount of charge to the ECM module the engine will start run a few minutes then shut down. See if you are getting 14 V when the engine is running check on the the helm volt meter or have a volt meter available and check at the batery terminals."

Joe I put my volt meter and it read 13.51v.and the batery has a good voltage I also check the cable on the stbr of the engine bottom and clean the terminal.

Swap engine coils first. No change after the coil swap? Then swap the spark control modules.

o.k. I change the coils first and no difference.I just finish swaping the spark control modules.No progress sofar but theyare great ideas.
 
Can you do the entire throttle

Can you do the entire throttle bodies? Just like swapping carbs. Need base gaskets.

By the way the spark control module was refer in my book as electronic spark control sensor or did I do the wrong thing.I could not find the word module atach to the spark plugs to save my life.Thanks for been there with your time.

"take a timing light with your next trial.

When it cuts out, hook up the timing light to see if spark is present, to separate ignition from fuel issues.

Could be a simple as the ECT is off and the computer is requesting too much fuel and flooding that engine out."

Guygaspar; I did change #23 and # 28after disconecting the batterie and shore power.not working.I am working in throttle body now.

Makomark; I will have a timing light monday afternoon so I can separate the problem betewen fuel or electric.

"sounds like the fuel system components are not at fault due to the problem remaining after swap.

I'd suggest troubleshooting a bit deeper unless you like part swapping.

Assuming the engine is in good mechanical shape, the remaining areas to check are the ignition and the fuel delivery control. If the ignition system still fires when it cuts out the next time, put a test light on the fuel pump supply lead. Could be something causing the pump to stop (which means the old one you replaced is a spare)."

makomark I really dont mind part swaping is the sheap way to do it considering that the other engine still works good so I know the parts are good.in the morning I will check the ignition and the fuel pump supply lead.I will let you know the results as I finish it tomorrow.P.S. i save the old electronic fuel pump.

"guygaspar-makokark and joe alongi; you three kept talking about gas in every sentence and everithing connected to gas so I decided to see everithyng about gas and when I did that I found out that the electric fuel pump gets cool off by a pipe running along that pump, it was not water and when I check my water pump the impeller was broken and the old electronic fuel pump was bad due to over heating and the reason why the engine always shot of at 165 is because someone set it the engine to shot off at 165 instead of 225. I want to thank you three people who took time out your lives to help me solve this problem.Not even 2 different mechanics could figure it out.and you three did. thank you againg for solving my problem you three are priceless.
